Photographing Dogs On Leash

A lot of the dogs I photograph are on leash.

At the photo shoot after our initial introductions, I’ll give the dog mom or dog dad instructions on how they can hold the leash during the photo shoot that helps me edit the leash out easily.

I’ll ask them to hold the leash up and away from the dog. Look at the first photo in this post. Having the leash up and away from the body makes it easier for me to edit out in Photoshop.

This is easier said than done at times. If the dog holds still it’s easy.

If the dog moves or walks around, then the owner has to follow the dog and try to still hold the leash up and away. The owner also needs to try and keep some distance between the dog and themselves.

If I have an assistant at the photo shoot, he/she may hold the leash and the dog mom may be over by me.

Sometimes I forget to tell the dog mom in advance but she needs to be prepared to get a little bit of exercise if her dog moves around a lot! ha

This was a pretty simple edit to get ride of the leash and hand. The background makes it easier. If you look back at another recent post of mine called Before and After, you’ll see a much more complicated leash and dog handler removal.
